Such a demand from the usual conservative treatments can be made possible only if it is rightly equipped for the management.

Shalyathantra department is spacious and is designed to serve the purpose to help the students understand things easily. Images depicting most common Shalyathantra related diseases, their pathology as well as models which show the surgical steps are the highlights.

Apart from the department room, students are permitted to use the hospital facilities such as the Shalyathantra OPD, the parasurgical procedure rooms and the OT room.

The OPD is provided with facilities to examine and diagnose the condition correctly and has 2 parts- one for examining an anorectal disease (which occurs near to anal opening) and the other for examining the orthopaedic conditions. Such a differentiation is made with the right spirits to prevent a possibility of contaminations as well as to maintain hygiene, a golden rule all medical students must follow.

Parasurgical rooms are where parasurgical management of diseases are dealt with namely Agnikarma (thermal cautery), Kshara karma (chemical cautery) as well as orthopaedic bandages for fractures and sprains.

OT room is designed with modern technology and procedures such as abscess drainage, corn excision Ksharasutra ligation (with special medicated thread used in fistula diseases) is carried out.

Facilities:

Shalyathantra OPD is provided with the basic requirements of a clinical subject such as an examination table means to radiologically understand a condition and a few others to deal with Shalyathantra diseases specially. These are examination table designed for easier patient placements during anal condition examination along with a more specific lighting system to help focus on the condition and make examinations easier and more correct.

Parasurgical room is made with an intention to deal with parasurgical procedures and so it is equipped with Agnikarma modalities which is used to deal with conditions like:

  • Tendinopathy or joint pains: Tennis elbow and golfers elbow
  • Foot pain like in plantar fasciitis
  • Sciatic pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome occurring in hands

It also has facilities for Rakthamokshana or venesection such as in:

  • Varicose veins
  • Eczema and other skin diseases

Another method of rakthamokshana is using medicinal leeches in:

  • Long standing Venous and diabetic foot ulcers
  • Skin conditions

OT room is designed to incorporate modern technologies and provided with a room for autoclaving the instruments and essentials for a surgical or parasurgical approach.

It also has an area demarked for the purpose of making ksharasutra and its storage.

OT is generally used for procedures like:

  • Abscess draining
  • Corn excisions
  • Skin tag excisions
  • Kshara sutra ligation and kshara karma in diseases of anal region such as piles and fistula

The facilities provided in Shalyathantra are intended to make students understand the conditions which may require an additional treatment as well as make them aware of the need of maintaining hygiene and overall discipline them to be good medical students.
